The Qld TreX Champs & MultiSport Festival hosted on Queensland’s idyllic Sunshine Coast with its rainforest trails and fern-filled bushland in Beerwah State Forest.  Add to this a Dirt Fest Weekend of trail run and mountain bike events, and you’ve got a ‘not to be missed’ action packed weekend of off road adventure for the entire family.

About the TreX Champs & MultiSport Festival

The TreX and Qld X-Triathlon Champs & MultiSport Weekend is based in the spectacular Sunshine Coast Hinterland, on the banks of Ewen Maddock Dam.  The rainforest trails and fern-filled bushland of Beerwah State Forest provide the perfect setting for an Off Road Triathlon and MultiSport Weekend.

TreX XTri The XTri course includes some of the best fast and flowing single track mountain bike trails, and gritty off road running trails found anywhere in Australia and includes a standard distance, sprint, junior and dirt kids courses.

Trail Run Discover all the natural beauty of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland on our 8k & 4k Trail Run which traverses the rainforest on winding single track trails.

XC MTB The 10km MTB lap is an action packed loop that dives in and out of the ferned rainforest with flowing single track trails.  Go hardcore on the 50k or go hard in the 20k event.

Dirt Master The Qld Dirt Master & Dirt Mistress Challenge is back. Tackle 3 hardcore events across 2 days in our Dirt Master, Mini Dirt Master or Junior Dirt Dude Challenge.

The event is approx 1 hour and 5 minutes travel time from Brisbane

Ewen Maddock Dam Camp CLOSED to the Public

Ewen Maddock Dam Camp is currently totally closed to the public and there is no access to any of the buildings or toilet or shower facilities.  The general public are not permitted to enter the camp grounds beyond the camp gates at any time other than during designated event times as it is trespassing.  We ask all competitors to respect this as SEQ Water has been very supportive to ensure the event can go ahead and it’s important that we respect their guidelines so we can continue to use the site for the sport we love in the future.

The mountain bike course can be accessed from the SEQ Water car park on Steve Irwin Way, however the swim and run course is on private land and cannot be accessed outside of event times.

Mountain Bike Practice Ride

The majority of the mountain bike course in Ferny Forest is open to the public so can be ridden at most times.  Best access is from the SEQ Water Car Park on Steve Irwin Way just out front of the camp gates.

The camp is fully closed to the public and any trails on the camp cannot be accessed outside of event times as it is trespassing.

The mountain bike course will be fully marked and open for a practice ride from 4pm Friday before the event.  Please note that there will be no course marshals on the course on Friday afternoon and riders choose to ride the course at their own risk.  Riders are advised to ride in groups and ensure they have a mobile phone with them in case of an emergency.

Important Note! No Pets Permitted

At In2Adventure we love our fur kids, however, due to regulations from SEQ Water pets are not permitted in any area on the event site.  If a pet is brought onto the site you will be asked to remove them immediately, so to avoid that please leave your pets at home where they are safe.

On Arrival

  • Go through the SEQ Water car park and enter through the camps gates.
  •  Continue along the gravel road to the parking area.
  • If the parking area is full turn back towards the gate and park on the left hand side of the road.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
There is limited parking near HQ. If you are a day participant we encourage you to car pool to avoid a long walk to HQ.

Parking

Parking on site at the venue is limited and can include a walk up to 400m to Race HQ.  We encourage all participants to car pool wherever possible to keep the number of vehicles to a minimum.

Catering

A big thank you to our event partners who will be keeping us well fed and energised throughout the weekend.

Shep’s Food Van

Shep’s Food Van will be on site selling hot food & cold drinks at the following times:

  • Saturday: 6am to 5pm
  • Sunday: 6:30am to 2pm

EFTPOS will be available.

Jungle Bean Coffee

Tarryn & the Jungle Bean Coffee Van will be back providing the best coffees, ice cold frappes and snacks to keep us fired up throughout the weekend.  Be sure to look at purchasing your Jungle Bean Coffee Keep Cup at the event to help save on paper cups during the event.

Freedom Treats

What better on a hot day than an icy cold ice cream!

Catch up with Dale for your delicious Soft Serve Ice Cream.

Facilities

Facilities at the race venue include:

  • Beach & Swimming in the dam
  • Portable Toilets
  • Limited drinking Water on site – please ensure you bring sufficient water along to the event site
  • Catering from Sheppie’s Mobile Van
  • Coffee from Tarryn and Jungle Bean Coffee
  • Ice Cream from Freedon Treats

IMPORTANT: Drinking Water

Due to the closure of the camp there is NO DRINKING WATER ON SITE.

Water will be brought to the site for aid stations, however all athletes are requested to bring their own drinking water for before, during and after the events.

Aboriginal Heritage

The event organisers would like to respectfully acknowledge the Kabi Kabi First Nation People the Traditional Owners of the land/s on which this event is taking place and Elders both past and present.

We also recognise those whose ongoing efforts to protect and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures that will leave a lasting legacy for future Elders and leaders.

Environment

At all times athletes and entourage must respect the natural environment and native wildlife.  Part of the course is in a National Park Area which is governed by strong environmental laws. Athletes either must carry their rubbish (gel wrappers, bottles etc….) or drop them in the designated litter zones only.

This is an important issue and any violation of this rule will result in disqualification.

Native Wildlife

Australia is home to a number of poisonous reptiles and insects that may be encountered on the course during the event and in training. In most situations when left alone they pose little harm however be aware you are entering into their habitat.

Landsborough

Landsborough is the closest town to the event site.  It is located approximately 5mins drive south of the venue.  Named after British explorer, William Landsborough; sleepy Landsborough is a small town at the base of the Blackall Range.

Settled in 1871, Landsborough was originally called Mellum Creek, named after the Aboriginal word ‘mellum’ meaning ‘volcano’.  A popular weekend tourist destination and one of the Hinterlands historic towns, there’s something for everyone in the family, or if you are passing through, Landsborough is a great place to grab a bite to eat and stretch the legs at one of the towns many cafes and eateries.

Climate

The Sunshine Coast could well have one of the most ideal climates in the world. With an average of 7 hours of sunshine a day, the Sunshine Coast really does live up to its name.

During the summer months from December to February the temperature ranges from 17 – 28 degrees and are offset by cool sea breezes. During Autumn from March to May temperatures usually range from 13 – 26 degrees.

Shopping & Markets

With a variety of artisan and farmers markets, cutting-edge fashion boutiques and air-conditioned plaza shopping, the Sunshine Coast offers a bit of everything. Local markets offer one-of-a-kind trinkets, tasty food, handmade garments, original artworks, artisan furniture, home wares and jewellery. Eumundi heads the list of market destinations on the Sunshine Coast, with the whole town revolving around the market held every Wednesday and Saturday. Other excellent markets include the Noosa Farmers Market, Peregian Beach Market, Cotton Tree Market and Caloundra Street Fair which is always vibrant and buzzing with live music and entertainment.

Shopping in Landsborough

The town of Landsborough is located 5.6km from the venue and provides a range of grocery stores and food outlets, a pharmacy, general shopping and banks.

The town has a small number of boutique gift shops and second hand clothing shops ideal for stopping in to grab a cute gift, or a bargain. These shops offer a range of colourful products from locals and further afield. Some boasting eclectic and spiritual fair including crystals and a range of interesting jewellery and the town also has a pet store for all your pet needs.

Flights

The Sunshine Coast is easy to access due to it’s local airport and proximity to Brisbane, Australia’s third largest city.

The Sunshine Coast Airport is serviced by Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Qantas domestically as well Air New Zealand who provide seasonal flight services from Auckland. Centrally located in Marcoola, the Sunshine Coast Airport offers a range of transport options including shuttle buses, hire cars, taxis, and public bus services.

Alternatively, Brisbane Airport is both an international and domestic gateway to Queensland with regular transfers to the Sunshine Coast.

Bus services operate hourly door-to-door airport shuttle services between the Brisbane Airport and Sunshine Coast seven days a week. Transport between Brisbane Airport and the Sunshine Coast can also be accessed via the train to Beerwah, Landsborough or Nambour train stations.  Limousibes can be booked or private transfers.

Brisbane Airport is the international gateway to Queensland with regular transfers to the Sunshine Coast. Brisbane Airport operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has two major terminals servicing 26 airlines flying to 67 destinations.

There is no public transport to the event site and therefore car hire is the best option for making your way to the event.

Car hire is available from Sunshine Coast & Brisbane Airports.

Trains & Buses

A railway line connects the region to Brisbane in the south, and Gympie and beyond, to the north.

Interstate coach operators operate daily bus services to Brisbane where connections are made to the Sunshine Coast.

Family Discounts

Every effort has been made to keep entry costs to an absolute minimum, however we are keen to encourage families to be involved in Dirt Fest and we do understand that entries for a large family can add up.

If you are a family unit, and members of your family are looking at taking part in a number of Dirt Fest Events, then email us at info@in2adventure.com.au PRIOR TO ENTERING with the following details:

  • Your name, telephone number & email address
  • The names of those in your family who will be taking part in Dirt Fest and the events they will be entering.

We will consider each request on an individual basis.

Important Information about Family Discounts

  • Entries must be for members of one family unit. Groups of friends are not eligible.
  • An email does not guarantee a discount. A family discount will be offered only at the discretion of the Event Managers.
  • Discounts will only be considered prior to entries being received. No refunds will be given as a result of a Family Discount.
  • Entries must be made on the same order.
  • If a discount is offered and the entry does not match the details in the email request In 2 Adventure reserve the right, without prior notice, to debit the difference in entry fees from the credit card listed on the entry.

Triathlon Australia License

TreX Events are sanctioned by the sports governing body, Triathlon Australia. Participants who are not a member of Triathlon Australia will be required to purchase a Day License which is approximately $1.50 to $15 depending on the event.  This provides insurance coverage for participants.

To avoid having to pay the addition day license fee participants can choose to become a member of Triathlon Australia which as well as giving you a discounted event entry offers the following benefits:

Volunteers

Our volunteer team, affectionately known as the “True Blueys” are an integral part of all In2Adventure events.  Your help, energy and expertise are what makes our events possible and every minute that you donate is truly valued by our competitors and the event team.

As a member of the True Blueys you’ll have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to play a key role in delivering major national and international event – and the rewards don’t end there!  Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people, learn new skills, check out what goes on behind the scenes at a major event, experience the excitement of an Off Road event and have a fantastic time outdoors in some of the most spectacular locations in Australia.  Many of our current staff and competitors started out right where you are now and never looked back!

Registration

It is compulsory for all competitors to register in person at the designated times at Race HQ prior to the start of each event.

Please refer to the EVENT TIMETABLE for registration times.

At Registration

  • Line up in the queue indicated with a valid form of photo identification and a copy of your entry confirmation.
  • Advise the officials of your name and category.
  • Confirm all your details are correct and that you are entered in the correct race.
  • Collect your race pack
  • Collect pins and ties for your race numbers from the collection area.
  • Take your bike & equipment to the transition area (triathlon only).

Dirt Master Check In

ALL Dirt Master, Mini Dirt Master & Junior Dirt Dude contenders MUST check in during the designated registration times prior to EACH event.

This is extremely important for safety and timing purposes as it is critical to be able to identify exactly who has started each event and that those timing chips are activated for that event.  If a contender has not checked in at registration it will be recorded that they are not racing and no times will be registered.

Ties and pins for race numbers will be available for collection from the desk near Registration.  Alternatively race belts are on sale at the i2a store at Race HQ for run numbers.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Race Numbers, Timing Straps or Timing Chips MUST NOT be defaced, cut or altered in any way.   Penalties and replacement costs will apply where this is not followed.

Timing Straps & Chips (Triathlon & Trail Run)

Strap the timing chip to your left ankle with the bulky side to the outside of your ankle. If you have any problems with this please see one of the event team as it is critical that timing chips are positioned correctly for times to be recorded.

Timing chips are to be returned to marshals in the post race finish area.  Teams will pass the band to the next team member in transition at the end of each leg

Timing Chips and ankle straps must not be cut, and the timing chip must not be removed from the ankle strap.  Where competitors choose not to comply with this ruling a $20 replacement fee (payable at the finish line) will apply.

Run Numbers (Triathlon & Trail Run)

Run numbers must be displayed on the front of the torso during the entire run leg.  The number is to be facing the front and easily visible.

It is critical that the run number is clearly visible at the finish line to ensure a time is recorded.

Safety pins are available for collection near the registration area.  Alternatively, race belts are on sale at the i2a store at Race HQ.

Mountain Bike Numbers (Triathlon & XC MTB)

Triathlon

The bike number is to be attached to the front handle bars of the bike using the ties provided.  It must be easily visible for the entire mountain bike leg for easy video identification and marshal recording throughout the mountain bike lap.

XC MTB

Dirt Master Race Numbers and Timing Chips

Our awesome Dirt Master, Mini Dirt Master & Junior Dirt Dude Contenders will be issued with special Dirt Master race numbers identifying them as Dirt Master Contenders.

Athlete Race & Safety Briefings

At In2adventure we value the safety of our athletes and aim to ensure they enjoy the very best experience at our events.  For this reason, it is compulsory for all athletes to attend their designated briefing at the assigned times at Race HQ.

Before the triathlon please ensure that your swim warm up is completed before the briefing as the Technical Officials and Water Safety will not allow athletes in the water during the briefing.

The Race Director reserves the right to refuse entry to the start to any competitor that does not attend the briefing, as it includes important safety and course information that is essential for athletes to enjoy a safe and fair race. The briefing also includes any last-minute changes to the course or event details.  No compensation is applicable if a competitor is refused entry to the start for this reason.

Litter Zones

 

We are extremely privileged to be granted permission to race in the natural beauty of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and want to ensure that we keep the area in pristine condition.

To make it easier for athletes litter zones have been implemented on the course where litter can be deposited.

Each litter zone is clearly signed with a start and end point.  Litter may be deposited between these signs only.

Marshals and video cameras on the course will be monitoring this closely and penalties and/or disqualification will result, so do the right thing and don’t spoil your race.

MTB Course Litter Zones

One litter zone will be located on the Mountain Bike Course just after the transition area, and the other will be located approximately half way around the course on the fire trail after CP 5.

Safety

Your safety is a key consideration; however, Cross Triathlon, XC MTB and Trail Running does involve risk.

First Aid

A dedicated First Aid tent will be manned by the team from St John Ambulance.  The tent will be located in a central area at Race HQ.

Dedicated first aiders are also strategically positions throughout the course.

Water Safety

Water safety on the swim is provided by Bribie Surf Lifesaving Club.

3 Safety Rules

  1. Stop and assist any competitor that is in need of emergency assistance.
  2. Report any incident to the next available marshal or emergency radio point on the course.
  3. Compete within your abilities.

Safety on the Course

On the course there are a number of things athletes can do to assist themselves and fellow competitors:

  • Slow down in steep areas.
  • If you’re not confident with a section of the track dismount your bike and walk if you feel more comfortable. Please just remember to keep to the left so other riders can pass easily.
  • Ride/run on the left hand side of tracks.
  • Compete within your limits.
  • Let common sense and courtesy prevail. We want to see you safe and sound at the end of the race.

Triathlon Competition Rules

A good and fair race always includes a few rules and to ensure you can enjoy your race and TreX events will comply with the rules and regulations as set out by Triathlon Australia.

It’s a good idea to have a read of the document below BEFORE the start of the event.  These rules will be enforced by Triathlon Australia officials and unfortunately ignorance isn’t an excuse that can be accepted.

TreX Swim Course

Water Temperature

Average water temperature during April is around 20 degrees which means it will more than likely be a non wetsuit swim, however Technical Officials will measure the water temperature prior to each race and results will determine if wetsuits are permitted.  The water temperature and ruling about wetsuits will be published on social media, the event notice board and via the public address system.

Full details about water temperatures and wetsuit use can be found on p20 of the ITU Competition Rules.

Water Clarity

Ewen Maddock Dam is a fresh water dam and the water quality in the swim area has been tested and is suitable for swimming.

Water clarity is fair, however there are some reed/weed patches in the dam. The swim course has been designed to avoid these area as much as possible, however please be aware that it is possible that while swimming you may come in contact reeds/weeds in the water.  Swimmers are to avoid any areas where thick weeds are visible.

Tides, Currents & Conditions

Being an inland dam there is no current or tides to contend with, however, on a windy day the dam surface can become slightly choppy.

Swim Start

The race start will be a running start from the sandy beach into the water.  The water deepens quickly from the shore, minimal dolphin dives will be required.

Swim Course

The swim course is an out and back anti-clockwise lap and is marked with 1.5m orange buoys and 1m yellow pyramids marking the inside circumference of the course.  Swimmers keep these buoys on their left.

  • Standard: 2 x 750m laps.
  • Sprint: 1  x 400m lap
  • Junior: 1 x 150m lap
  • Dirt Kids: 1 x 50m lap

Swim Exit

Lap 1: The exit is at the beach and onto an open grassed area.  At the end of lap 1 swimmers have a short 50m run to reenter the water at the same place as the swim start.

To Transition: The run from the swim exit to transition is approx 100m following the concrete path to transition.

TreX Mountain Bike Course

The mountain bike course is a 10km lap that takes in the newly developed trails within Beerwah State Forest.  The course will test riders skills and endurance as they shred it around the flowing single tracks with some key challenges including some steep, pinchy and rocky climbs, some craggy descents, bridges, creek crossing and fast flowing single tracks

New riders will enjoy the flowing nature of the course, while more experienced riders will love the pinchy climbs, creek crossings, bridges and roll overs. If you’re not too tired to look, you’ll also enjoy the panoramic views from many points along the course.

The course is suitable for those new to mountain biking, but will also challenge those with advanced technical riding skills in a number of sections.

Overtaking

Below are the standard overtaking procedures on the mountain bike course.

  1. Keep to the left of the track where possible and allow others to pass.
  2. Walking something you do not feel confident riding is fine! However, please move off the track to allow riders right of way.
  3. When passing, give the person in front a friendly shout to indicate that you wish to pass “Passing when you’re ready”
  4. If being passed, as soon as safe to do so move to the edge of the trail. You may need to ride off the trail to allow the faster rider to pass
  5. You must give track to a rider who wishes to pass, do not deliberately block from overtaking, this is against the rules and contrary to the spirit of the event.
  6. If you aren’t confident or capable of riding off the track to let another rider pass then riders must dismount off the track to allow other riders to pass.
  7. Race hard! But keep it friendly & have a great time doing it!

Mountain Bike Feed Zone

The Coaches Zone for triathlon has been renamed the ‘Feed Zone’ for all events.

  1. The MTB Feed Zoneis not an Aid Station. The MTB Feed Zone is an area where athletes can access their own hydration/nutrition during the event.
  2. Hydration/nutrition can be picked up directly by the athlete, or it may be handed to them by a designated assistant as the athlete passes through the feed zone ONLY.
  3. Note: This is NOT a drop zone for unrequired items that an athlete took out of transition e.g. hydration packs, clothes, accessories, etc.
  4. The Start and End of the feed zone will be clearly signed. Please place feed zone items between this signage only.
Placement & Collection of Hydration/Nutrition
  1. Hydration/Nutrition may placed in Feed Zone prior to the event.
  2. The athlete is responsible for collecting the items immediately after the event. All uncollected items will be delivered to the LOC Lost Property.


TreX Trail Run Course

This spectacular and technically challenging trail run course is a 3.5km lap circumnavigating the Race HQ area. Champs Competitors will complete 3 x 3.5km laps before finishing at Race HQ.

This is one of the most picturesque run courses of the series with the majority of the trail running on winding single track through ferned rainforest.  It includes uneven, rocky trails, a creek crossing, some open trails and, of course, more of what we love about cross triathlon… Wet & Muddy sections!

The course passes back through HQ on each lap so there will be lots of cheers and encouragement as you push yourself onto the rest of the course with a water station for refreshment.

This is an OFF ROAD triathlon, expect to get wet, muddy & dirty, so a shoe that provides grip, stability and quick drainage will be best for the course.

Aid Stations

There will be one aid stations on the 3.5km Trail Run Course near Race HQ.  Athletes will pass this aid station twice on each lap.  The aid station will offer water in cups.

Transition

Transition is located on the Open Grassed Area Opposite Race HQ.  There is a short 100m run along a concrete path from the swim exit to the transition entry.  Racks are signed and each  athlete has a 50cm wide allocation.   Mountain Bikes are racked by the seat.

After registering, take your equipment to transition.  There is limited space in transition and competitors are asked to take all due care and precautions when entering and exiting the area.

IMPORTANT: Only competitors are permitted in the Transition Area. Spectators can walk to transition to view the swim, bike and run transitions however spectators are not permitted in, or around the fenced area.

For transition opening and closing times please refer to the EVENT TIMETABLE.

Transition Entry

After registration take your bike, helmet, running shoes, drinks and any other required equipment to the transition area.

Please ensure the following prior to entry:

  1. MTB Number is attached securely to the bike handlebars; and
  2. Bike helmet is fitted and fastened to your head.

Bike Safety Checks

When entering the Transition Area an official from Triathlon Australia will complete a safety check on your bike and helmet.  Please ensure that your bike is in good working order, your helmet is fitted and fastened correctly and handle bar ends are plugged.

Set Up

Place bikes where indicated by the transition race signage and set up race equipment next to your bike. Space is limited to 50cm per athlete so please consider other competitors and keep equipment neat and tidy.  Mountain Bikes are to be racked by the seat.

For safety, bags or boxes with equipment are not permitted in the Transition Area.  These will be removed if they are taken in.

Courtesy in the Transition Area

We’re all at the event to have a great day out!  Each athlete has a 50cm allocated space to rack bikes & leave any kit that required during the event. Please keep equipment neat and tidy and please don’t move or interfere with any other competitors gear or bike in the transition area.

Get to Know the Transition Area

It’s important to know where to go in the transition area for the start and finish of each leg. It’s preferable to find this out BEFORE the event rather than during the event.  Take some time in the morning to check out:

  • The Swim Entry and where your bike is located from the entry point;
  • The Bike Exit;
  • The Bike Entry and how to return to your allocated bike space; and
  • The Run Exit.

Transition Closure

The Transition Area will be cleared at closure time. Participants must have placed their equipment and cleared the are. If participants arrive at Transition at closure time they will not be permitted to take part in the event.

This will be enforced as it is a Triathlon Australia safety and regulatory requirement that the Transition is free from competitors before the start of the event and all participants are required to attend the pre-race brief.

Bike Collection & Transition Area Clearance

The Transition Area will be open for bike collection when the final mountain bike has returned from the course.  Please listen for announcements at Race HQ.

Participants are asked to ensure their equipment is cleared from Transition prior to the start of the Dirt Kids event.  If equipment is not removed by this time, participants will be required to wait until the finish of the Dirt Kids event before collection.

Dirt Kids Transition Area

Dirt Kids is primarily a non-competitive event and is all about giving our young champions of tomorrow a chance to have load of fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

Dirt Kids will place their bikes in the transition area just prior to the Dirt Kids Event Start at approximately 12:50pm.

Please listen out for the announcements at Race HQ at around 12:50pm for details.  Transition rules are relaxed and we welcome parents and friends to encourage participants in a really positive and helpful way.

Drinking Water

Due to the closure of the camp there is NO DRINKING WATER ON SITE.  Water will be brought to the site for aid stations, however all athletes are requested to bring their own drinking water for before, during and after the events.  We thank you in advance for your assistance.

Triathlon Events will start at the Beach on the Banks of Ewen Maddock Dam.

Please check the wave start times on the notice board at Race HQ and ensure you are at the start line ready for your race call well in advance.


Finish Area

The finish is always a special place for our athletes, so make sure you make your finish photo one to remember and get ready to celebrate your achievements.  Our volunteers will be serving fruit and water and collecting timing chips in the finish area.

Timing Chips

All athletes issued timing chips are to be returned to the Volunteers in the athlete recovery area. If a timing chip has been lost on the course during the event, please notify the timing personnel immediately after crossing the finish line.  Dirt Master contenders please refer to the information outlined HERE.

First Aid

The team from St John will be on hand at the finish line for any first aid needs.

Triathlon Bike Collection

Transition will be opened for competitors to collect their own bikes when the final mountain bike rider has returned to transition.  Competitors are to wear their race numbers to verify bike collection.


Presentations & Prizes

The TreX Presentation Ceremony including TreX Series Championship awards will take place at approx 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

The Trail Run Course

This will be a challenging run on the tracks and trails within Ferny Forest at Ewen Maddock Dam on Queensland’s spectacular Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The course is a 4km lap with 8k competitors completing 2 laps.

This is one of the most exciting trail run courses of the Dirt Fest series with the majority of the course run on winding single track trails which are uneven under foot.

The lap includes uneven, rocky trails through picturesque, ferned rainforest with the odd creek crossings, pinchy climbs, some open trails and of course more of what we love about trail running with some wet & muddy sections.

This is an OFF ROAD trail run, expect to get wet, muddy & dirty.

One Water Station will be located at the lap point at Race HQ (4k mark).  Participants are encouraged to have the capacity to carry extra water with them on the run if required. A small hydration pack usually works well.

The maximum tyre diameter for the Mountain Bike is 29 inches.  The minimum cross section is 1.5 inches.  Studded and/or slick tyres are allowed.

Clip-ons (tri-bars) and traditional road handlebars are forbidden.

Only traditional MTB bar ends are authorised and the bar ends must be plugged.

A highlight of Qld MultiSport Festival is the State Dirt Master & Dirt Mistress Titles. This is the Ultimate Off Road Endurance Challenge.  Contenders for the title of Qld Dirt Master or Dirt Mistress will take on three grueling long course events across two days covering 100km.   Events include:

  • Saturday AM: Qld X-Tri Championships 1500 – 30 – 10.5
  • Saturday PM: 8k Trail Run
  • Sunday AM: 50k XC MTB

Each contender who finishes all three events will be awarded the title of Dirt Master or Dirt Mistress and receive a Dirt Master Finisher T-Shirt, Finisher Medallion & be inducted into the Dirt Master Hall of Fame.

Mini Dirt Master Challenge

But don’t be fooled – this is not a challenge for the faint-hearted, it will take a huge amount of guts and determination to take out the Title of Mini Dirt Master and DirtMistress.

  • Saturday AM: TreX Sprint XTri – 400 | 10 | 3.5
  • Saturday PM: 4k Trail Run
  • Sunday AM: 20k XC MTB

Each contender who finishes all three events will be awarded a Mini Dirt Master Finisher Medallion.

Junior Dirt Dude Challenge

Age: 12-15yrs

We all know those Dirt Masters & Dirt Mistresses are extreme, but what about our younger off road champions?  Well don’t worry, we have something for you with the Junior Dirt Dude Challenge.

But don’t be fooled – this is not a challenge for the faint-hearted, it will take a huge amount of guts and determination to take out the Title of Junior Dirt Dude.

  • Saturday AM: TreX Junior XTri – 150 | 4 | 1.5
  • Saturday PM: 4k Trail Run
  • Sunday AM: 20k XC MTB

Our awesome Dirt Master, Mini Dirt Master & Junior Dirt Dude Contenders will be issued with special Dirt Master race numbers identifying them as Dirt Master Contenders.

Race Number & Timing Chip Allocation

Each contender will receive:

  • 1 x Mountain Bike Number Plate
  • + 1 x Run Number
  • + 1 x Ankle Timing Chip.

Please utilise these numbers as outlined below.

TreX Triathlon
  • Dirt Master Bike Number Plate + Dirt Master Run Number + Ankle Timing Chip.
  • At the finish of the race retain both Dirt Master Race Numbers AND the ankle timing chip.
Trail Run Festival

  • At the finish HAND IN your ankle timing chip and Run Number as these are not required for the Mountain Bike event.
XC MTB Festival

  • The XC MTB Number with timing chip will be issued at check in for the mountain bike event on Sunday morning.

Event Check In

ALL Dirt Master, Mini Dirt Master & Junior Dirt Dude contenders MUST check in during the designated registration times prior to EACH event.

This is extremely important for safety and timing purposes.  It is critical to be able to identify exactly who has started each event and that those timing chips are activated for that event.  If a contender has not checked in at registration it will be recorded that they are not racing and no times will be registered.

Kids Mud Rats

Free Non-Competitive Kids Event

The Mud Rats Run & Dirt Bike are short free, fun, non-competitive events for our Dirt Fest Kids. There will be a short 500m fun run and Dirt bike around the Race HQ area, so Mum, Dad & friends can be on the side line to cheer our littlest champions on their way.

Mud Rats Mud Run: 3:15pm Saturday

The Mud Rats Mud Run will take place before the start of the trail run event on Saturday. It is open to kids aged 5 to 9 years. Any kids under 5 years of age who would like to take part must be accompanied around the course by a parent or guardian who is over 18 years of age.

Mud Rats Dirt Bike: 8:05am Sunday

The Mud Rats Dirt Bike will take place just before the start of the XC MTB events on Sunday. It is open to kids aged 5 to 9 years. Any kids under 5 years of age who would like to take part must be accompanied around the course by a parent or guardian who is over 18 years of age.

Registration

Although this is a free event participants will be required to register and a Parental Consent Form must be provided on the day for all participants. Please check the EVENT TIMETABLE for registration times.

What is Cross Triathlon?

At this point it might be a good opportunity to dispel some of the myths and look at what Cross Triathlon is NOT.  There is a strong misplaced belief that Cross Triathlon is an Adventure Race.  This is far from reality.

Cross triathlon is a set format including a Swim, Mountain Bike and Trail Run on a predetermined, marked course and is governed by the rules and guidelines of a traditional triathlon.  Put simply, it’s the on road version of the sport transposed into a bushland setting with mountain bikes and off road trail shoes.

Cross triathlon first emerged in 1996 on the island of Maui, when mountain biking and triathlon met in a bold new racing format that included an open-ocean swim, mountain bike race and  trail run which attracted a mufti-faceted market  including outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, mountain bikers and triathletes.

The inaugural ITU Cross Tri World Championships were held in 2011 in Spain with over 400 athletes competing across the elite, junior, age-group and paratriathlon categories.

Triathlon Australia and The International Triathlon Union are demonstrating their commitment to Cross Triathlon with the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships now an established annual event.  The TreX Series is currently playing host to the Australian Cross Triathlon Championships and the Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships.

Are there differences between traditional triathlon and cross tri?

The answer is YES! Although governed by the same rules and guidelines of on-road triathlon, it does have some key differences:

The Swim

The swim course is quite similar to the on road version of the sport.  Competitors find themselves plunging into dams, lakes, rivers and the ocean and sometimes have to get in touch with their ‘dirty’ side as swim entries and exits can be muddy and boggy.  Reeds, lilies’ and sometimes wildlife can be a part of the swim leg in a cross triathlon, which just adds to the adventure of the event.

The Mountain Bike Course

The mountain bike course is an eclectic combination of trails which can include fire trails and 4WD tracks, bush trails, sand. rocks and single track (no tarmac here!).  Each course is different and unlike road triathlons, a mountain bike course is very different every time you ride it.  It requires a combination of skill, speed, strength and strategy to stay at the pointy end of the field.

In the TreX series a lot of the course is suitable for new comers and those new to mountain biking, however there will also be technical sections to challenge riders mountain bike skills and to add a touch of excitement to the course.  If a rider does not feel confident, that’s fine, there’s always the option to walk the more technical sections (they are not usually too long) and start riding again when they feel comfortable.

Course distance can often be deceptive for those unfamiliar with mountain biking.  10km on a mountain bike track is very different to 10km on the road.  Riders must constantly be focussed on the trails as they twist and turn and challenge with pinchy climbs, log roll overs, bridges, rock gardens and water crossings.  There is no cruising or freewheeling when you get off road.  Each athlete must be in the moment and engaged with the course from start to finish.  Arguably, it is this element of the sport that keeps competitors coming back for more and more action.

No Such Thing as Drafting

Due to the nature of the mountain bike leg drafting does not come into play in the cross version of the sport.  However, courtesy on the mountain bike is governed by recognised mountain bike guidelines such as:

  • Where possible riders must keep to the left of the trails and allow others to pass;
  • When passing riders should alert the person in front with a friendly shout “On your left”, or “On your right” depending on which side they intend to pass; and
  • When being passed, and it is safe to do so, riders will move to the left or right as requested.

The Trail Run

The trail run is where cross triathlon really shines by offering participants a true off-road experience.  Trail run courses cover some incredibly diverse terrain and showcases some of Australia’s most spectacular bush and coastal areas.

Typically the trail run includes trails, tracks, creek crossings, steep craggy ascents, rough descents, sandy banks, rocky scrambles and sometimes there’s no tracks at all!  This means that competitors must stay focussed every step of the way as they challenge themselves to run, scramble and climb to the welcome site of the finish arch and an appreciative crowd at Race HQ

Is X-Triathlon just for Elite Athletes?

The answer to this question is an overwhelming “NO!”

The national TreX X-Triathlon series has been running for seven years is currently welcoming all manner of participants from 7 years to 70, from those who have never taken part in a triathlon, to mums, dads and families, weekend warriors and those who just love the outdoors and want to try something new.

It really is a family event and offers something for all level of participants including:

Dirt Kids (7-10yrs)

A non-competitive event for 7 to 10 year olds. Typical distances include 50m Swim, 3km XC MTB and 500m Run.

Junior & Teaser Course

This is an event designed for younger participants and those who want to come and try a x-triathlon for the first time in a shorter event format.  Distances typically include 150m Swim, 5km XC MTB & 1km Trail Run.

Sprint Course

This course includes all the action of the long course event, but with a shorter distance.  Usually including a 350m Swim, 10km XC MTB and 4km Trail Run.

Long Course

The long course evolves throughout the season and gets progressively longer and more challenging before culminating in the championship event at the end of the season with a 1500m Swim, 30km Cross Country Mountain Bike and 10km Trail Run.

How can I get into X-Triathlon in Australia?

Although cross triathlon is a relatively newer sport in Australia, there are a number of events across the country.  The Te-X X-Triathlon is a national series with 6 events including the State, National and Regional Championships.

What happens if an event is sold out?

  • Numbers are limited at each event for participant safety and environmental reasons.
  • When an event is sold out a notice will be posted on the NEWS PAGE of the TreX website.
  • No entries will be accepted after the capacity has been reached.
  • No 'On The Day' entries will be accepted when the event is full.
  • Where possible event organisers will make every effort to advise participants when entries are close to capacity via TreX newsletters and on the NEWS PAGE of the website, however entries may close without notice.

What happens if an event is cancelled or rescheduled?

  • An event will only be cancelled or rescheduled if there is a risk to the safety of participants or the environment.
  • A decision on event cancellation or rescheduling may only be made on the evening before an event.
  • If an event is cancelled a notice will be posted on the NEWS PAGE of the TreX website.
  • Full details of applicable credits in the case of a cancellation or rescheduling can be found in the EVENT REFUND POLICY

What if I’ve won a prize or medal & can’t stay for presentations?

If a prize winner is unable to stay for the Prize Giving Ceremony they may organise for their prize to be posted to them by contacting the team and sending a registered post bag (big enough for the prize) with postage paid to the address below. Prizes must be claimed within 4 weeks of the event.

Please Note:

  • Only those at the presentations will be eligible for random draw prizes.
  • Prizes and medallions are packed away in the event trailer post event.  Some events require travel and at times the trailer may not be available to be unpacked for up to 4 weeks post an event.   In some circumstances it can take up to this long for prizes and/or medallions to be distributed when participants are unable to stay for prize giving.

Do I have to stay for the presentations?

  • Staying for the presentations is not compulsory, however, it is a great way to finish the day and cheer on fellow competitors.  If you are unable to attend the presentation you will not be eligible for random draw prizes.
  • Please be aware that for safety reasons, at most events cars may not leave the car park area until the transition area is open and all competitors have completed the mountain bike leg.

What happens after I finish my race?

  • Take some time to celebrate your achievements!
  • Return you timing band to the marshals at the finish line.
  • Grab some refreshments and fruit from the catering tent at the finish line.
  • Complete a feedback form for an entry into the random prize draw.
  • Grab a coffee and a meal from our on site caterers
  • Check out the great specials from our partners at the event expo.
  • Chill out and catch up with other competitors and share your war stories as you cheer on your fellow competitors as they cross the finish line.
  • Stick around for the presentations and random prize draw.  Who knows, you might just take out a prize yourself!

How do I become a Triathlon Australia member?

  • To become a member of Triathlon Australia visit their website at www.triathlon.org.au
  • By becoming a Triathlon Australia member you will become exempt from paying the one day license fee applicable to all Tre-X Off Road Triathlon Events.

What if I have to withdraw from the event?

If you are unable to make the event full details are outlined in the EVENT REFUND POLICY outlining necessary actions and follow up in the case of an applicable refund or credit.

Can I change or transfer my entry?

It is forbidden to participate in an event under another competitor's name or to offer your entry to another participant. Transfer of entry to another competitor is not permitted.

What is provided in my race bag?

Race Bags usually include:

  • A computerised timing band;
  • A race number to be worn on the front of your torso for the run legs;
  • A bike number to be attached to the front handle bars or stem of your bike;
  • Special giveaways from our event partners (where applicable);
  • Event Tech T (if purchased or included in an early bird entry offer)

What facilities are available at the event?

Facilities vary significantly between events, some event venues offer 5 star resort facilities with accommodation and camping on site while others are slightly more adventurous.

  • At some locations there is limited or no drinking water at Race HQ. For these events competitors are required to bring their own water for before, during and after the event.
  • Flush, Portable and bush toilets are available at Race HQ.
  • Catering and Coffee.

Can I carry a music device? (MP3, IPod, etc)

As stated in Triathlon Australia's rules and regulations competitors are not permitted to race with any music devices including mobile phones, MP3 players, earphones etc, . Competitors found with any device such as these will be disqualified.

Is water provided on the course?

Aid stations are made available on the trail run course approximately every 3 km and also at the Finish area. Competitors are expected to be self sufficient for water on the bike leg.

Please note at some events there is limited or no drinking water on site so on these occasions competitors are asked to being enough water and drinks to last before, during and after the race.

Can I wear a hydration pack?

Yes, hydration packs can be worn.

What is a wave start?

In order to avoid having every competitor entering the water at the same time, competitors are divided into “waves” to give you plenty of room to swim and enter transition smoothly. Waves will start at approximate 3 minute intervals. See the notice board at Race HQ for your wave start time.

Do I have to wear clip in bike shoes?

You do not have to wear ‘clip in’ bike shoes.  Depending on your confidence and skill level on a mountain bike, ‘cages’ or standard flat pedals with running shoes are another options. These may also speed up your transition times from bike to run.

Do I need a Mountain bike?

You will require an off road bike as all the riding takes place on fire trails, dirt tracks and some single track that is all unsuitable for a standard road bike.

Can I wear a wetsuit?

The water temperature will be measured by officials from Triathlon Australia. For age-group competitors, if the water is 22 degrees or above then it will be a non-wetsuit swim. If the water temperature is below 22 degrees competitors will be given the option of wearing a wetsuit.  It is not compulsory to wear a wetsuit if the water temperature is below 22 degrees.

As per the Triathlon Australia Race Rules, the temperature limits for the use of wetsuits and maximum time to be in the water are as follows:

What Equipment do I need for the event?

Participants will require the following equipment on the day:

  • Off Road Trail Running Shoes
  • Swimmers
  • Goggles (if desired)
  • Swimming Cap (At events where swim caps are provided in race packs, these swim caps must be worn during the swim leg)
  • Mountain Bike - In good working order and with plugs on the handle bars.
  • Bike Helmet - The bike helmet must be in good condition and meet Australian Safety Standards.
    Note: To ensure competitors safety, officials from Triathlon Australia will do a check of participants bikes and helmets before entering the transition area. If bikes and helmet do not meet the requires standards, competitors will not be able to take part in the event.
  • Bike Shoes (if applicable)
  • Hydration Pack or Water Bottles
  • Running / Riding Shirt / Vest
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Towel
  • Sun Lotion
  • Insect Repellent
  • Chairs to relax in after the event.
  • IMPORTANT: Due to the longer distance of the Champs Events all Long Course Competitors are highly recommended to carry at least 2 litres of water either in a hydration pack or in bike bottles with them on the Bike Course.
