So You Want to Race the 2016 X-Tri World Champs in Australia?
In November 2016 the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships will be held in the Snowy Mountains, New South Wales.
This is a fantastic opportunity for any Australian to represent their country and pull on the ‘green and gold’ uniform at a world championships on home soil. This is also the first time that this event has ever been held in the southern hemisphere.
The International Triathlon Union (ITU) is the international governing body for triathlon and you will find all international races listed on their website. The ITU is made up of 5 regional Confederations of which Triathlon Australia as the governing body for the sport in Australia is a member.
25 Qualification Places Per Age Group
There are 25 places available in each 5 year age group where competitors can qualify for the Australian Team. These places will be highly sought after, however the TreX Series offers competitors three opportunities to gain qualification points. Each round counts towards your overall total points and the Snowy Mountains round offers double points as an Australian Championships.
So with 15 months to go what do you need to do to make the most of this amazing opportunity?
1. You will need to qualify to be a part of the Australian team.
There are 3 TreX events that are qualifying races, they are:
- TreX Victoria – Bendigo 28/29 November 2015
- TreX New South Wales – Snowy Mountains 28/29 February 2016 – Australian National Champs – DOUBLE POINTS
- TreX Queensland – Sunshine Coast 16/17 April 2016

2. You will need to be a member of Triathlon Australia.
If you are entering one of the races listed above with the intention of qualifying for the Australian Team you need to be an ‘annual member’ of Triathlon Australia, ‘One Day Memberships’ (ODM’s, Day Licences, etc) do not count towards this.
Annual membership of Triathlon Australia provides you with a number of great benefits apart from insurance coverage whilst you are racing and training, details of membership can be found on the Triathlon Australia website.
3. Submit an ‘Expression of Interest’.
Submission of an ‘Expression of Interest’ is made via the Triathlon Australia website.
